As a photojournalist in Turkey during the earthquake, I found myself at the intersection of tragedy and storytelling, tasked with capturing the raw emotions and devastation unfolding before me. Analog photography holds a timeless allure that transcends its status as a “dated” medium. Despite the advancements in digital technology, I find immense joy and satisfaction in the art of analog photography. There’s a certain magic in the process of shooting with film— from carefully selecting the right film stock to manually setting exposure and composing each shot with intention and patience. Unlike digital photography, where instant gratification is the norm, analog photography requires a slower, more deliberate approach, forcing me to slow down and truly engage with my surroundings. The tactile experience of loading film into the camera, winding the shutter, and developing the negatives by hand adds an element of craftsmanship and authenticity that is unmatched in digital photography. Moreover, the inherent unpredictability and imperfections of analog photography lend a sense of character and nostalgia to the final images, evoking a timeless aesthetic that digital formats often struggle to replicate. Despite its “outdated” label, analog photography continues to inspire and captivate me, reminding me of the beauty and artistry that can be found in embracing the past.
